Travertine is one of the most requested looks in bathrooms right now. Its soft, layered veining and warm cream, ivory and grey tones make a shower feel calm and spa-like. But many people stop at the same question: is real travertine actually a good idea for shower walls? This guide covers what to know about the natural stone, how travertine look wall panels compare, and how to pick the right SPC shower wall panels for your space.
Is travertine good for shower walls?
Natural travertine is a beautiful stone, but it's a demanding one in a wet room. It forms with tiny holes and pores, so it's usually filled at the factory and then sealed after installation. In a shower, that seal wears down with daily water, soap and cleaners, so the stone typically needs resealing to keep it from absorbing water and staining. Travertine is also a softer stone that can etch when acidic cleaners touch it. And because it usually goes up as tile, you're signing up for grout lines that collect soap scum and need regular scrubbing.
None of that means real travertine can't work. It just means it takes ongoing care. If you love the look but don't want the upkeep, travertine look panels are worth a close look.
What are travertine look SPC & PVC wall panels?
Our travertine shower wall panels are made from SPC (stone plastic composite), a rigid, waterproof core made from stone powder and PVC, with a printed travertine design and a PVC surface on top. That's why you'll see us call them SPC & PVC wall panels. You get the layered, natural-stone look on a panel that:
- Is waterproof, so it won't soak up water the way porous stone or grout can
- Never needs sealing or polishing
- Has no grout lines to scrub, just a few clean seams
- Comes in large, full-height sheets, so a whole wall goes up with only a few panels
- Goes up with adhesive and matching trim
Real travertine vs travertine look panels at a glance
- Look: Natural stone has one-of-a-kind variation. Our panels capture that layered texture and color in a consistent, repeatable pattern.
- Water: Natural travertine is porous and depends on a good seal. SPC panels are waterproof all the way through.
- Upkeep: Stone and grout need periodic sealing and scrubbing. Panels wipe clean with a soft cloth and mild cleaner.
- Weight and size: Stone tiles are heavy and small. Panels are lighter and cover a big area per sheet, which means fewer seams.
Choosing your travertine color
We carry five travertine looks, each with its own mood:
- Arctic Ivory Travertine has a soft white base with fine vertical veining. It keeps small bathrooms bright and pairs well with brushed gold or black fixtures.
- Ivory Travertine brings warm cream tones and gentle horizontal layering for a classic, spa-like feel.
- Glacier Grey Travertine has a cool grey base with subtle striations, a good fit for modern bathrooms with white or chrome.
- Sandveil Travertine is a warm ivory-beige with a refined linear texture.
- Mistline Travertine is a soft beige-grey with quiet linear veining that works in both warm and cool color schemes.
Lighter travertine tones make a compact shower feel larger. Warmer beige and cream shades work well with wood vanities, while grey tones suit matte black or chrome hardware.
Picking a panel size
Our travertine panels are all 96 inches (8 feet) tall. Sandveil and Mistline come as 48" x 96" (4x8) sheets, which cover large walls with the fewest seams. Arctic Ivory and Glacier Grey come in 36" x 96", and Ivory Travertine is offered in both 24" x 96" and 36" x 96". Narrower panels can be easier to handle and can mean fewer cuts on smaller walls. Measure each wall's width and height, then plan how many panels and trim pieces you'll need. If you'd like a second set of eyes on your measurements, bring them to our Irving showroom.
Where travertine looks great beyond the shower
Because the panels are waterproof, the same travertine look works on tub surrounds, behind a vanity, on a kitchen backsplash or in a laundry room. It also makes a calm, natural accent wall in a living room or bedroom. Using one travertine color across a bathroom, from the shower to the vanity wall, gives the room a seamless, finished look.
Finish it with matching trim
