Fiberglass shower surrounds do the job for years, then the shine fades, the corners yellow and hairline cracks start to show. If yours is ready to go, you don't have to default to tile. Large SPC shower wall panels give you a stone or marble look with very few seams and no grout lines to scrub. This guide walks through what to compare when you replace a fiberglass shower surround, and how to choose the right panels.

Why people replace fiberglass shower surrounds

Most fiberglass and acrylic-style surrounds are one-piece or three-piece shells. They're practical, but they tend to look dated and they show wear over time:

  • The glossy finish dulls and scratches with years of scrubbing.
  • Stains and yellowing build up in corners and around the soap ledge.
  • Cracks or flex spots can appear where the shell isn't fully supported.
  • The plain white look rarely matches a refreshed bathroom.

When it's time for something new, the usual choices are another fiberglass kit, ceramic or porcelain tile, or full-height wall panels.

SPC and PVC shower wall panels vs tile

Tile is beautiful, but it comes with grout. Grout lines stain, crack and need resealing, and a tiled shower usually takes the longest to finish. Here's how panels compare as a fiberglass shower surround replacement:

  • Fewer seams. Each panel is 96 inches (8 feet) tall, so one panel can cover a wall section from the tub or pan up toward the ceiling. A typical three-wall surround needs only a handful of panels.
  • No grout. No grout shower walls means far less scrubbing. A damp cloth and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner keep the surface looking fresh.
  • Waterproof material. SPC panels won't swell, rot or soak up water the way drywall or grout can.
  • A real design upgrade. Instead of plain white, you can pick marble, travertine, stone, concrete or wood looks with realistic veining and texture.

Tile can still make sense if you want a small mosaic pattern or a very custom layout. For most people swapping out a worn fiberglass shell, panels give the high-end look with much less upkeep.

What "SPC" and "PVC" mean on our panels

You'll see both terms when you shop for shower wall panels. PVC is the plastic that makes a panel waterproof. SPC (stone plastic composite) blends stone powder with PVC, which makes a denser, more rigid panel that holds a printed marble or stone look very well. LuxeLayer's shower wall panels are SPC, which is why we describe them as SPC & PVC shower wall panels. If you're comparing options online, those are the two keywords to look for.

How to choose panels for your new surround

Pick a look first. A bright white marble like Arctic White Marble keeps the clean feel of a white surround but adds soft veining. For something warmer, browse our travertine-look SPC / PVC shower wall panels. Darker marbles and concrete looks work well for a bolder, modern bath.

Measure each wall. Measure the width and height of the back wall and both side walls. Panels are 8 feet tall and come in widths that vary by design, so check each product page for the size before you count panels. Choosing a width that fits your walls well means fewer cuts and fewer seams.

Plan the trim. Panels go up with adhesive and matching trim. Plan for inside corners where walls meet, edge trim where the panels end, and sealant for the joints. You'll find these in our shower panel collection and accessories.

Check the wall behind. Whatever goes up, it's only as good as the wall it sits on. Once the old surround is out, make sure the wall is flat, solid, clean and dry before the panels go on. If you're working with a contractor, share the product pages and installation guide with them while you plan.

Tub surround or walk-in shower: both work

Panels fit a standard tub surround as easily as a walk-in shower. Around a tub, the panels cover the three walls above the rim. In a walk-in shower, they can run the full height of a standard 8-foot wall. Many customers use the same panel outside the shower too, as an accent wall behind the vanity, so the whole bathroom feels connected. Our waterproof wall panels collection shows the full range.

FAQ

Can SPC panels replace a fiberglass shower surround?
Yes. SPC shower wall panels are a popular fiberglass shower surround replacement because they're waterproof, come in large sheets with few seams, and offer marble, stone and wood looks that fiberglass can't.

Are PVC shower wall panels the same as SPC?
Not exactly. SPC panels are made of stone powder and PVC, so they're denser and more rigid than plain PVC sheets. Both are waterproof. Our shower panels are SPC.

Do panels have grout lines?
No. Panels are joined with matching trim and sealed, so there are no grout lines to clean.

How many panels do I need for a tub surround?
It depends on your wall widths and the panel width you pick. Measure all three walls and divide by the panel width, or call us and we'll help you count.
